What is Iphigénie en Tauride about?
Iphigénie and her brother Oreste have a blood-soaked history, born into the lavish Greek dynasty. Their inheritance is owed to a legacy of violence.
The sister journeys to an abandoned temple, whilst the brother is on the verge of madness. The distance between them sparks questions of whether the other is alive or dead, but they both dream of the day they are reunited.
A mysterious stranger washes up on the lonely island, seeking Iphigénie with news of her family’s downfall.
The history of Iphigénie en Tauride
Iphigénie en Tauride is widely regarded as an operatic masterpiece, and one of Gluck’s most important works. The 1779 opera was his fifth opera for the French stage. The drama is based upon the ancient Greek play by Euripides, about the family of Agamemnon after the Trojan War.
