The Book of Mormon musical is a box office powerhouse written by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and the co-creator of* Avenue Q*, Robert Lopez (composer for Disney’s Frozen). Parker and Stone first explored Mormonism in their 2003 South Park episode “All About Mormons” before travelling to Salt Lake City, Utah, to research the musical.
What is The Book of Mormon Musical About?
The Book of Mormon London musical follows the story of two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who travel to a small town in Uganda to spread the word of the Latter Day Saints. They quickly discover the villagers are more concerned with the AIDS epidemic, oppression, and starvation than religion.
Fans of South Park will recognise Parker and Stone’s signature humour — bold, irreverent, and a little shocking — yet the musical famously received no major backlash from the Church of Latter-Day Saints. In fact, the Church commented it might be “entertaining for a day” while adding that “the book is always better.” With sharp satire, unforgettable songs, and over a decade of West End success, it’s no surprise that Book of Mormon London tickets remain in such high demand.
